Why does this index not show temperatures?
Because each temperature is a separate request to a weather service. Loading several hundred of them to fill one index page would make the page slow and put needless load on a free provider, for information you did not ask for. Open a city and its current conditions load immediately.
What works if the weather service is unreachable?
Everything except the observation itself. Each city page computes sunrise, sunset, solar noon, twilight and day length from coordinates and the date, and its time zone details from the IANA database — none of which needs a network request. A failed weather fetch leaves one card saying so and changes nothing else on the page.
How current is the reading, and is it cached?
Readings are cached in your browser for 30 minutes and always displayed with the time they were taken, so an older value is never presented as the current one. Past that age the page fetches again rather than showing the stale figure.
